It was R&D fishing this week on beautiful Lake Toledo Bend!!
The water temperature was 87-93 degrees.
Capt. Steve was fishing with his new prototype 8 weight one-piece (7’2”) rod (rod not shown) weight forward line. He was using a Gamechanger white shad and also a perch pattern made by Scott Fossum, Clear Lake, TX (picture A).
Look how the bass just inhaled the Gamechanger fly (picture B). Try to enlarge this picture to actually see how far down this bait was inhaled. Special note, Capt. Steve is guiding on the hottest lake in the country for big bass, Toledo Bend. He now realizes that he has to build a heavier rod, possibly a 10 weight needed. Stay tuned!
This is another reason why Capt. Steve needs to build heavier fly gear.
This is a picture of another bass that actually took the 5 weight rod out of the Captain’s hand on the strike (picture C).
To finish up the day, Capt. Steve decided to walk the bank using the Mudfish Bluegill prototype rod with a Hopper Dropper fly made by Dean Kahney with a squirrelly John fly on the dropper.
During Capt. Steve’s many adventures around the country, the acquaintances he meets always have a confidence “go to” fly that works for them on their local lakes. They say “use my fly and let me know how it works on Toledo Bend.” So if you have a fly you like to use on your local lake, the Captain would love to test it on Toledo Bend. Give Capt. Steve a call to discuss your fly or lure or if you feel the need to send Capt. Steve a lure, mail it to: P.O. Box 275, Hemphill, TX 75948. Your fly or lure might be the next hottest lure on Toledo Bend.
